The Central Pennsylvania Aphasia Center is a non-profit 501c3 organization dedicated to improving quality of life for individuals with chronic aphasia and raising awareness of the disorder. The Center supports the individual with aphasia as well as family and caregivers.
Aphasia (UH-FAY-ZHUH) is a communication disorder resulting from damage to the speech and language center of the brain, usually due to stroke or traumatic brain injury. It affects a person’s ability to verbalize, understand words, read, and write while intellect is generally unaffected. Processing numbers and math calculations may also be difficult.
Approximately one million individuals in the United States suffer from aphasia.
